2026 SHPO Field School

In 2026 the Utah SHPO will host its third annual Field School, an intensive eight-week program from May 26 to July 17, 2026, designed to train the next generation of archaeologists in Utah Cultural Resource Management. Under the guidance of Compliance Archaeologist Ryan McGrath, three selected students will gain a comprehensive, hands-on understanding of the entire archaeological process, alternating between field work—including surveys in Box Elder County, rock imagery recording at Fremont Indian State Park, and an excavation in the historic Alta mining town—and essential office and lab skills like site mapping, report drafting, and artifact processing.
