DNR Forestry, Fire, & State Lands Archaeologist

Job Description

Job Title:  Archaeologist Location:  Salt Lake City, Utah Job Description: The Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands (FFSL) is seeking an Archaeologist to join our team. This exciting statewide opportunity involves directing and participating in surveys of archaeological and anthropological sites, as well as directing and reviewing archaeological surveys and excavation permitting. You will assist in Section 106/104 project review cases, provide technical assistance on archaeology projects to FFSL, and conduct archaeological consultation and field inventories. A key part of this role is collaborating closely with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to ensure all FFSL projects are properly evaluated and comply with state and federal laws.  This job requires either experience with a related BS/BA Degree, with a MS/MA Degree in Archaeology (or closely aligned field) preferred. Responsibilities


  • Conducts archaeological reviews for projects permitted and/or implemented by FFSL.

  • Submits proper documentation to SHPO showing that undertakings being proposed by FFSL and/or its permittees have no adverse effects on historical sites, or that mitigation and documentation of historical sites is properly documented before to project implementation. 

  • Plans and manages projects and/or programs. Writes and/or discusses project/program plan(s), recommendation(s), and/or finding(s). 

  • Review cultural resource contracts and submissions from consultants/proponents on behalf of the Division. 

  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc. 

  • Assist staff in prioritizing projects and managing workflows. 

  • Write reports, staff and leadership memorandums, correspondence, and presentations. 

  • Provide guidance during wildfires and coordinate closely with other fire, emergency, and land management agencies.   

  • Build relationships, be responsive to internal and external stakeholders, and work collaboratively with them.


Qualifications


  • Experience or familiarity with the archaeological resources of Utah or similar environments.

  • Understanding of cultural resources laws, regulations, and guidance within Utah or similar regions. 

  • Experience coordinating and collaborating with diverse stakeholders is required. 

  • Comfort working outside in various terrains, hiking through complex terrain with inclement conditions, as well as in the office.

Ideal Candidate:


  • Has extensive experience with a related BS/BA Degree or an MS/MA Degree in Archaeology. - Can within one year of employment acquire a State of Utah Principal Investigator Permit from the Public Lands Policy Coordinating Office (PLPCO) - Is familiar with applicable federal and/or Utah state laws and regulations governing cultural resource management - Has a high degree of self-motivation and can work with minimal supervision. - Must work well with technical and professional staff, elected officials, and local stakeholders.   - Possesses a valid Utah vehicle driver's license. - Has experience with natural resource and land management agencies, as well as wildland fire. - Is comfortable using ArcGIS.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience prioritizing and managing projects.

  • Experience working with private landowners. 

  • Experience within the State of Utah and/or DNR. 

  • Knowledge of Utah's natural resources and their issues. 

  • Experience managing contracts, invoices, and budgets.


Supplemental Information


  • Possess a graduate degree in a related field of study or training and experience equivalent to a graduate degree.

  • Risks are found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.

  • Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, and lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.

  • Work will take place in the field and may involve being on boats, UTVs, and walking on rugged terrain as well as sedentary office work.

  • Can within one year of employment acquire a State of Utah Principal Investigator Permit from the Public Lands Policy Coordinating Office (PLPCO).

  • In-state travel will be required. 

  • Potential for a 4/10 schedule, Monday - Thursday or 5/9 schedule, Monday - Friday.
