Job Posting: Field Archaeologist

Job Title: Field Archaeologist ($19–$22/hr)

Reports to: Project Archaeologist

Date: September 28, 2022

Qualifications BA in archaeology, anthropology, or related field required Summary/Objective: Oversees and manages field crews of two to four people during surveys, monitoring, or excavations. Can identify and record historical and precontact sites in the field. Can accurately describe the constituents of a site for reporting purposes and NRHP Eligibility determinations. Works with the Project Archaeologist to develop and execute field strategies on a project-by-project basis. Works with office staff to manage field data.


Essential Functions: • Assists with reporting • Directs and supervises field crew • Conducts archaeological research at the project area, including surveying, probing, excavation, and monitoring • Ensures that project performance protocols are followed and completed Competencies: • Ability to manage field work to completion • Ability to collect and transmit field data • Excellent oral and written communication skills • Excellent analytical skills including implementing scientific methods and data interpretations • Meticulous attention to detail • Valid U.S. driver’s license and copy of driving records from the DOL

Work Environment: Field Time Requirements: 85% / Office Time Requirements: 15%


Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use his/her hands, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is regularly required to lift as much as 50 pounds and use field equipment including, but not limited to: shovels, screens, tarps, GPS units, digital cameras, compasses, trowels, tape measures, buckets, and pry bars. The employee is often required to shovel and fill buckets with soil.


Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: Full-time; generally weekdays, although some weekend work may be necessary.


Travel: Up to 85%; most travel will consist of 1–5 overnights, although longer overnight stays may be required.


Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field. Knowledge and experience in archaeology of the Plateau and Basin culture areas preferred. Experience conducting archaeological field work (1-2 years).
